Meet Our Staff

Brian

Brian Goodremont, owner and operator of San Juan Outfitters.  Brian grew up in Northwest Ohio, spending his time outdoors canoeing, kayaking, and hiking with family.  Brian has worked on the island in eco-tourism for 12 years, as a kayak guide and boat captain.  His favorite hobbies other than sea kayaking include ultra-running, triathlon, and Nordic/backcountry skiing.  In the off season, he enjoys spending as much time as he can in the Rocky Mountain state with his family, AKA G-pod.

Margo

This is Margo’s 6th year working for Brian in the whale watching and kayaking industry on San Juan Island. She was raised near Seattle, Washington and is a graduate of Western Washington University where she studied K-8 Science and Psychology Education, minor in Geology. She student taught in England, and has spent a winter season in Maui as a hiking guide. She currently works as a science outreach educator at the University of Washington Laboratories. Her hobbies include running, camping, hiking, knitting, reading, painting, and birding.

Blake

Most recently Blake served as Sustainability Coordinator for the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.  His responsibilities included building and bridging lines of cooperation between students, faculty, staff, and administrators in relation to sustainability issues.  Blake also managed projects that focused strongly on energy use, transportation, and identifying renewable resource opportunities.

In 2007 he earned his bachelor's degree in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins, where he co-founded and directed several environmental and energy-related student groups.  Blake tends to spend free time kayaking or birding, and will pounce on any chance of escape to the mountains of his native Washington for a chance to go backpacking or hiking.  This is Blake’s 3rd season leading sea kayak tours in the San Juan Islands.

Deborah

This is Deborah's 4th season as a kayak guide in the San Juan Islands. She earned her B.S. in Geology from Western Washington University and loves to talk about earth processes! She is a rock hound from way back and you may see her combing the beaches for rocks to add to her collection.  Aside from her love of geology and kayaking she enjoys skiing, ice climbing, mountaineering, trail running, biking and pretty much anything else that allows her to be in the great outdoors! This is Deborah's 5th season as a kayak guide in the San Juan Islands.

Rebecca

Aileen

Aileen grew up in Portland, Maine, and attended Smith College where she graduated with a degree in psychology and a minor in German (she's fluent). Aileen has been visiting her family on San Juan Island for years now, and counts spending time outdoors and living near the sea as two of her passions in life. Things that make her very happy are exploring, running, looking for birds, traveling to new places, reading in her uncle’s shop (Harbor Bookstore), visiting with friends, and laughing as much as she can. This is her fourth year kayak guiding in the San Juan Islands.

Kate

2008 will be Kate’s second season on San Juan Island. She’s a mid-west girl at heart, raised in Michigan between the suburbs of Detroit and her family farm on Lake Huron. Kate is a 2008 graduate of Northern Michigan University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management. She worked mostly in Adventure-Based Learning settings and at a climbing gym before deciding she wanted to get into kayaking. When she’s not taking reservations at the desk, Kate can be found climbing, dancing, mountain biking, playing in the woods or rocking out to blue grass music in the kitchen while she bakes pies from a secret family recipe.

Kendall

Kendall grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where her interest in marine biology naturally took root.  She obtained a degree in Ecology/ Evolutionary Biology before leaving the desert to research whale biology and behavior in Gloucester, MA. Later, she spent three years both above and below the water while living on Catalina Island, CA, where she taught marine science to children from around the country.  In 2007 she joined us on San Juan Island working as a naturalist guide and first mate, and she hopes to spend many more years in the islands soaking in the local wildlife. When she’s not working, Kendall loves to hike, run, write, paint, and explore new places.

Phong

Phong first came to San Juan Island in his continued attempt to avoid getting a real job. In that quest he has lived and surfed in Maui, ski patrolled in Utah, taught wilderness medicine classes all over the country, and, of course, kayak guided in the San Juan Islands. When not kayak guiding he can be found riding his mountain bike in the woods, skiing in the mountains, loading his motorcycle on and off the ferry, or sleeping in his bed in Seattle.

Casey

Casey is a graduate of Northern Michigan University’s Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management program and is pursuing a graduate work in environmental education. This is her first year on San Juan Island but she has guided in other areas including Ketchikan, Alaska and on Lake Superior. Casey’s passion for the outdoors was inspired by her family’s travels around the world. She has lived in India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia. From this she learned that her favorite past times always involve the wilderness, specifically the water. She still has a childlike desire to explore tide pools and play in the waves, which works well for a kayak guide.
