M/V Sea Hawk got to experience some curious resident orcas this afternoon. Captain Chris and myself took our guests over to the west side of San Juan Island to encounter J-pod. When we approached the orcas they were porpoising quickly and high out of the water. A lot of the time when we see them doing this, they are picking up speed while traveling.
We watched Granny's group travel past us and then slow down. They started to socialize with one another and it looked as though push one another around. One orca would "lay" on top of the water and another one would come up underneath and push the orca laying on top of the water! Guests were very excited to see this interaction!
After spending some quality time with the orcas, M/V Sea Hawk motored north around Henry and Spieden Island. On these islands we encountered Bald Eagles and Harbor Seals. Since this time of year is pupping season for the seals, I was able to point out seal pups to the guests! So not only did we see orcas, but we were able to see a varitey of other wildlife in the area!
