Nestled in close to Pearl Island and just north of Roche Harbor, Posey Island can't help but draw families in for some intertidal zone fun. After paddling out to visit a kelp forest, we came back to Posey Island where the 5 kids and 4 adults had a blast exploring the shoreline. We uncovered crab after crab and popped lots of rock weed. Today, during out 3 hour sea kayak tour, we were paddling on the south side of Posey Island and saw about six Black Oyster Catchers, beautiful birds with distinctive red and long beaks, chattering loudly and scouring the intertidal zone for food. Oyster Catchers are native to the San Juans and it is always exciting to see them in action.

Today I paddled out of Roche Harbor on a private sea kayak tour and we paddled over to Posey Island for a picnic. Posey Island-- at high tide one of our nation's smallest state parks-- is a lovely spot to take a break, rest, relax, watch the sunset and even stay the night.
