Kayaking, San Juan Island

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Kayak

I first learned how to sea kayak when I started working for San Juan Outfitters in 2012. From then on, I have grown my kayaking skills and become the owner of my very own kayak. After paddling many different boats through San Juan Outfitters, I was pretty sure of the boat that I wanted and was looking for.

A friend sent me a link to a beautiful blue and yellow 2003 Valley Avocet that was being sold on Lopez, and I could not pass up the opportunity...

Whale, that was a close one!

This past weekend's overnight was one for the books, or in this technological day, one for the blogs! Try as I may, I feel my words will pale in comparison to the outstanding trip our lovely guest had this weekend... but here I go. Friday morning came with some much needed rain for the San Juan Islands. Things had been quite dry, and so locals alike were happy to see the precipitation. I was worried it would affect the guests mood and excitement but when Tyler and I...

Friday June 26. J-Pod, Eagles, Otters.

6/26/15:

San Juan Outfitters five hour tour departed Roche Harbor at 11:30am this morning and travelled South through Mosquito Pass.  The conditions were fantastic; a balmy 75 Fahrenheit and just enough breeze to offer our paddlers relief from the cloudless skies.  After taking a quick lunch at Open Bay, we were met by several J-Pod resident Orcas and enjoyed witnessing tail slaps and breaches from under fifty yards away.  Whether it's your first time or your hundredth...

Blood and Moss - from Sea Stars to Chitons. Monday, June 22nd 2015

We had a spectacular day paddling on the 5 hour tour around Henry Island!  From harbor seals to juvenile bald eagles, we saw the full scope of aquatic life the San Juan Islands have to offer.  We visited blood stars and mossy chitons on the reefs of Half Moon Bay and enjoyed a ride on the ebbing tide around Kellett Bluff.  We finished the day witnessing a full bob of harbor seals sunbathing on the rocks in Mosquito Pass.  Another splendid experience on the Salish Sea!

The Rain Shadow of San Juan - Friday, January 16 2015

The Pacific Northwest is known for its rainfall.  And we are not complaining.  The rainfall here means full rivers, green grace, and a wonderful temperate summer.   While places like the Olympic Peninsula get up to 60 inches of rain a year and Seattle close to 40 inches, San Juan Island receives as little as 15 inches of annual rain fall.  Why the difference?  San Juan Island is in a rain shadow, which acts as a kind of umbrella for the islands.  Here in the San...

Beautiful Skies around Henry Island, 5hr, July 20th

The sun breaking through on a mostly overcast sky gave us the perfect temperature to kayak a great distance. We moved south through Mosquito pass, pausing for a moment through Garrison Bay and English camp, and eventually reached our lunch destination at Open Bay. It was a great paddle and although worn out a bit, everyone was in high spirits.

5-Hour Paddle With Sunny Skies

Today was another beautiful day here in the San Juan's.  Clear skies with great temperatures made for a pleasurable paddle.  The water chop did alter our route a little bit but did not impair on the fun and sight seeing.  We ended up paddling by English Camp and spotting several bald eagles.  We also had a seal decide to follow right behind our kayaks for about one hundred yards.  Also, we paddle by a mother seal with her pup that couldn't have been more than a couple...

Paddling On Glass Among Mountains - 7/8/14

What a picture perfect day we had!  Departing from County Park, we paddled south towards Lime Kiln State Park to drink in savory views of the Olympic Mountain Range with a dash of Mount Rainier on the horizon.  Turning our course north we rode on glassy water with the flooding tide as our conveyor belt, seeing circling bald eagles, purple ocher sea stars, and a few curious harbor seals.  The views of the Canadian coastal ranges shone as clear as they've ever appeared this...

Relaxing 5hr Paddle Around Henry Island - Monday July 7th 2014

Today was a spectacular trip around Henry Island. My guests were blessed with many sightings of multiple types of marine life. Around McCracken Point we saw some Harbor Seals relaxing and sunning in the Bull Kelp. As we continued down the west side of Henry Island I was able to point out the many types of sea-stars nestled in the rocks as well as the huge Bald Eagle nest perched above the water. It was really cool to hear the baby Bald Eaglets squawk about 60 feet above...

Another Gorgeous Day Kayaking! Sunday, June 9

Kayak guides Jesse and Ami enjoyed a sun and fun filled 5 hour tour today around Henry Island! With a stripped sun star, urchins, and a close encounter with a flying bald eagle it was a wonderful trip! Ami, Jesse, and their guest also spotted some raccoons scavenging in the intertidal zone for crabs and other good eats. After a calm paddle, an excellent lunch, and a lot of wildlife, everyone walked away with a smile!

Kayak guides Michael and Tyler had two great 3 hour...
