Going the Distance for Orcas!

M/V SeaHawk | Sunday, August 4th, 2019 | Naturalist Alexandria

What a great day we had out on the water today! Talk about going the distance!  All of our friends jumped on board M/V SeaHawk and eagerly awaited getting out on the water.  After we pushed off the dock we were excited to hear that there were reports of orcas, but they were very far down south.  We decided to just start trekking that way, hoping that we would be able to meet up with them!

Once we got farther...

Laura C. | M/V Sea Hawk | 7/31/21019 | 2:00pm

Today was an outstanding trip out of Roche Harbor!  M/V Sea Hawk carried passengers for only a few minutes before we had our first whale sighting!  We were so excited to hear reports that there was a humpback whale right outside the harbor!  Captain Sarah heard the news from a research vessel manned by The University of Washington and U.C Davis, studying whale scat!

As we approached the scene we all lifted our binos to see...

We had such a wonderful time aboard M/V Sea Hawk today!  Our vessel was filled with family fun including beautiful seas and interesting wildlife!  Junior naturalist, Conrad, was thrilled to be out on the water and maintained solid enthusiasm for all wildlife seen throughout the trip!  Our vessel headed north and we saw so many cool pelagic bird species along the way, including rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemonts, double...

Wildlife Adventure in Haro Strait and Beyond!

Naturalist Erin | M/V Sea Hawk | 2:00 PM | Friday, July 26, 2019

It was a true wildlife adventure aboard Sea Hawk this afternoon. We began our trip heading south out of Roche Harbor, but quickly decided that the weather would suit us better if we headed north. We found ourselves across the U.S./Canadian border, headed towards a wildlife refuge known as Mandarte Rock. This wildlife refuge is not only important for seals and other pinnipeds, but for a large array of birds...

Happy Hump Day!

Jordan | M/V Sea Hawk | 07/24/19 | 2:00pm

What a beautiful day!

Captain Sarah and I booked it out of Roche Harbor and headed out to open seas. We boated up north around Spieden Island and towards Johns Island and Stuart Island!

Here we passed by a cute summer camp where they put up teepees along the shoreline. We passed by a recreation of a Native American long house as we passed through John’s Pass.

Then we crossed Boundary Pass into open waters and up towards Saturna...

A Trek Far North to Get to Biggs Killer Whales

M/V SeaHawk | Monday, July 22nd, 2019 | 2PM Trip | Naturalist Alexandria

What a great day we had out on the water!  We all boarded onto M/V SeaHawk as we left Roche Harbor.  We worked our way in between Pearl Island and San Juan Islands as we left the harbor and headed north into San Juan Channel.

When we left the dock we didn’t have any firm reports to work off of.  This is by no means rare.  These orcas can swim over one hundred miles per day, and travel at speeds...

M/V Sea Hawk | Sunday, July 21, 2019 | 1:00 PM | Naturalist Erin

It was a beaufitul day aboard the M/V Sea Hawk in the Salish Sea. It was sunny, the water was calm, and there was an abundance of wildlife! We began heading out of Roche Harbor and going across San Juan Channel towards the south side of Spieden Island. On our way there, we saw lots of harbor seals hauled out on some rocks! There were some that were resting and warming up on the rocks, and there were some...

Orcas and Wildlife Near Waldron Island!

Jordan | M/V Sea Hawk | 07/20/19 | 2:00pm

What a beautiful day out on the water!

Captain Sarah and I headed out of Roche Harbor and boated towards Speiden Island to start our journey.

This very special island has herds of exotic sheep and deer still roaming the island! They were imported here in the 70’s and still meander throughout the forests and grassy hills. It’s always very cool when we pass by and see foreign animals in Washington!

We continued up across the San...
