Beautiful 5-hour trip

Another blue sky day here in Roche Harbor.  Today on our paddle we saw plenty of harbor seals, eagles, and even some harbor porpoise! We also found a lot of sea glass during our lunch break!

Residents! Whale Watching Tour 8/2/14

Yesterday we had an amazing day on the M/V Seahawk. For our morning trip we had a report of Residents to the north of Roche Harbor in Boundary Pass. I love trips into Boundary Pass, especially on clear days when you can see Mt. Baker in its entirety. We met up with K and J pods right off of the coast of Saturna and South Pender Islands in Canada. Oftentimes our trips cross into Canadian waters, but don't fret... you do not need a passport! We got to watch the Js and Ks...

Unforgettable 5-hour paddle

Today was one of those real special paddles.  We started our 5-hour trip heading north and viewing a pair of bald eagles and getting some up close looks at some harbor seals.  We continued our paddle by heading south down the west side of Henry Island.  As we continued heading south I noticed many boats in the same area gradually coming closer and closer.   By the time we made to a place called Kellet Bluff the whales were right behind us.  Jackpot.  We found a nice...

5 hour paddle with whales

Today was another beautiful day in the San Juans.  We ended seeing orcas on three separate occasions!  We sat and watched the whales for about 15 minutes total.  We also got to see some harbor seals and bald eagles up close as well.  The water was smooth and the winds were calm.  It was a picture perfect paddle.

Wonderful Kayak Day -- Three Hour Tour 7/26/2014

Today I had the pleasure of accompanying an amazing family on a pretty beautiful paddle. This morning we paddled out to the bull kelp forest near Battleship Island, just off of Henry Island. Bull kelp is an important species in the Salish Sea, creating critical habitat for crabs, small fish, and even harbor seals! We enjoyed the antics of a particularly friendly seal dipping and diving through the currents. On our way back into Roche Harbor we stopped on Posey Island the...

Lovely 3-hour adventure Friday, July 18, 2014

Our 3 hour paddle today was filled with heartwarming harbor seal encounters and exciting kelp discoveries. The adult female seals curiously nosed around our boats with their adorable, tiny pups, and we made a bull kelp horn out of an already detached piece of kelp, so as not to negatively impact the seals' primary feeding habitat. After modeling how to blow the horn, each guest took a turn and picked it up immediately! Usually it takes people a few tries, but these guests...

5-Hour Paddle With Sunny Skies

Today was another beautiful day here in the San Juan's.  Clear skies with great temperatures made for a pleasurable paddle.  The water chop did alter our route a little bit but did not impair on the fun and sight seeing.  We ended up paddling by English Camp and spotting several bald eagles.  We also had a seal decide to follow right behind our kayaks for about one hundred yards.  Also, we paddle by a mother seal with her pup that couldn't have been more than a couple...

Great 5-Hour Paddle With Eagles and Seals

We started out the tour by paddling from Roche Harbor through Mosquito Pass and out into the Haro Straight.  This is typically my favorite part of the paddle going from the narrow Mosquito Pass out into the openness of the Haro Straight. The conditions were perfect today, comfortable temperatures out on the water with glass-like water.  You couldn't ask for better weather!  We also had some close interactions with wildlife.  A momma seal was seen escorting her pup up the...

Great 3 hour family trip to Posey Island!

Today we had a great trip filled with awesome wildlife and beautiful scenery! Our family tour had a chance to stop on Posey Island, Washington's smallest state park (about an acre large) and do some tidepooling. From rock crabs to limpets, as well as a few oystercatchers who put on a show for us, it made for a great tour! We even had a curious harbor seal approach one of our boats to check us out. Just another great day out on the water!
