Today was an incredible day on the water! With temperatures nearing 70 degrees and blue skies all around, our guides and guests had a taste of summer in the beginning of June!
Several of our guides took part in a 3-Day Overnight Training. The paddled out to Stuart Island and used that as a base camp for two nights while they explored the area, both on the water and on land. Highlights included hiking to Tip-Top and the cemetery on Stuart Island as well as multiple sightings of wildlife. Porpoises, Bald Eagles, Barred Owls and Peregrine Falcon fledglings were among the species they saw. Last night there was a spectacular sunset and today the new overnight guides hatched a great paddle plan that brought them all back to our Roche Harbor facilities. Sounds like a great trip!
Guides Courtney and Andrew went out on the 5 hour orca search today. They ran the trip from the North end of Henry Island down South and they saw an almost completely white harbor seal hauled out in the inter-tidal zone. After lunch at Half Moon Bay, they came upon a Pelagic (water dwelling) Cormorant rookery in the rocks along the coast line. Due to strong currents and wind, they decided to turn around and head back North along Henry, sampling bull kelp and learning about seaweed along the way! All in all a great day!
