Kayaking, San Juan Island

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Kayak

I first learned how to sea kayak when I started working for San Juan Outfitters in 2012. From then on, I have grown my kayaking skills and become the owner of my very own kayak. After paddling many different boats through San Juan Outfitters, I was pretty sure of the boat that I wanted and was looking for.

A friend sent me a link to a beautiful blue and yellow 2003 Valley Avocet that was being sold on Lopez, and I could not pass up the opportunity...

5-Hour Kayaking trip with Orcas and more!

Today we started out by launching out of county park and started paddling north on a 5-hour kayaking trip.  The weather was perfect with blue skies and sunshine the entire trip.  Not long after being on the water we were surprised by a harbor seal popping up with 15 yards with what looked like a canary rockfish in its mouth.  We got to watch it gorge itself for awhile before paddling on.  We stopped for lunch and were just finishing up when we spotted a bull orca.  So we...

May 10th 5-hour kayak trip

We started out the day departing Roche Harbor with a small group of 3 guests, two from Ireland and one from the Dominican Republic.  It was an awesome opportunity to display the Pacific Northwest and all of it's natural beauty to guests visiting from so far away.  After about 45 minutes of paddling we got out to the Haro Strait where we were instantly greeted by many harbor seals.  Not 10 minutes later I heard some loud breathing and turned to notice a large tan head...

A Very Humpy Kayak Tour-September 5th, 2015

My blogs usually take place from the platform of our whale watching vessel, the M/V Seahawk. Today, however, history was made: My guests and I "got whaled" from kayaks!

Taking people kayaking compared to cruising on the whale watch boat is a completely different perspective. We are lower to the water, propelling ourselves along our path using nearly silent paddle strokes as opposed to the noisy diesel engine, typically in much smaller and intimate groups, and we are much...

Kayaks, Cupcakes, and Sunsets.

Looking for a good way to spend your weekend? Consider a getaway on the beautiful Stuart Island with San Juan Outfitters crew. A wonderful group of eleven set off from Roche Harbor last Friday afternoon with kayaks loaded full of camping gear, delicious food, and happy spirits! Kayak guides, Tyler, Adam, and Jaclyn lead the group from San Juan Island to the nearby Stuart Island. Along the way, the group spotted many majestic bald eagles and happy harbor seals while taking...

Relaxing 5hr Paddle Around Henry Island - Monday July 7th 2014

Today was a spectacular trip around Henry Island. My guests were blessed with many sightings of multiple types of marine life. Around McCracken Point we saw some Harbor Seals relaxing and sunning in the Bull Kelp. As we continued down the west side of Henry Island I was able to point out the many types of sea-stars nestled in the rocks as well as the huge Bald Eagle nest perched above the water. It was really cool to hear the baby Bald Eaglets squawk about 60 feet above...

Great 3 hour family trip to Posey Island!

Today we had a great trip filled with awesome wildlife and beautiful scenery! Our family tour had a chance to stop on Posey Island, Washington's smallest state park (about an acre large) and do some tidepooling. From rock crabs to limpets, as well as a few oystercatchers who put on a show for us, it made for a great tour! We even had a curious harbor seal approach one of our boats to check us out. Just another great day out on the water!

Virtual whale watching & sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands (follow us on Facebook or Twitter!)

I'm afraid I haven't been blogging as frequently as usual, and for that I blame Facebook and Twitter. We at San Juan Outfitters are on both (follow us athttp://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Friday-Harbor-WA/San-Juan-Outfitters/60... & http://twitter.com/sjioutfitters) and I've really been enjoying writing quick updates about our tours, staff, events, and of course, wildlife spotted.

I'll continue to blog, post and tweet(!) updates regularly, so keep reading!

Harbor seals 'play' with sea kayak tour

Blake arrived back at the dock this morning with an unusual report-- he saw a harbor seal breaching up out of the water just off his stern! This is extremely rare behavior for a harbor seal, and one I've never witnessed myself. This young seal was surfacing, slapping his back flippers on the surface, breached about four times, and "really seemed to be playing."
Pretty excellent unusual sight! Noelle and I will keep our eyes open for the next few days, and see if...
