San Juan Island Christmas Snow

San Juan Island received it's first real snow fall of the winter. The San Juan Islands and greater Puget Sound area does not get that much snow, surprisingly. We enjoy a relatively mild climate all year round. It does get very hot in the summer (anything over 80 degrees is considered "record breaking heat!) and winter days are usually 35 to 45 degrees. It was very exciting to wake up with snow! The kids on San Juan Island made snowmen & snow angles during their 2-hour delayed start from school.

Roche Harbor Resort in the snow

Both our Southern Resident Orcas and Transient (mammal-hunting) Orcas have been sighted multiple times this past week. On December 18th, a very lucky family visiting the Lime Kiln Lighthouse on San Juan Island encountered killer whales from shore! It was a big surprise since we did not previous have reports of whales in the Salish Sea. After looking at the photos, it's easy to see that these whales are Transient killer whales.  In addition, 2-3 Transient killer whales traveled right past Port Townsend on December 20th.

Southern Residents have been in and out of South Puget Sound several times this past week. These photos show just how close our killer whales were to Seattle!
